Smash Up! Action Heroes

Algunas de las ilustraciones que hice para la expansión de Smash Up! "Excellent Movies, Dudes". Después de hacer el arte para la facción adolescente de Smash Up! Me encargaron hacer una facción de héroes de acción de los años 80, uno de los encargos más geniales que he tenido. Estaba haciendo esto después de hacer 2 facciones más un grupo de titanes casi seguidos, arte promocional, todo el arte para otro juego de cartas, cosas para Corvus Belli y todo eso mientras trabajaba en mi otro trabajo como profesor de arte, así que estaba exhausto pero muy feliz de poder pintar parodias de películas que son una parte tan importante de mi infancia (sí, lo sé, engullir películas de acción para mayores de18 y la infancia son dos cosas que parecen contradictorias, pero la verdad, una vez que vi Acorralado, ya no podía volver a La Sirenita). Como el tema todavía era muy de los 80, continué con el aspecto de aerografía y debo decir que estoy bastante contento con el resultado.

Just some samples of the artwork I did for Smash Up's expansion "Excellent Movies, Dudes". After doing the art for the teens faction of Smash Up! I was commissioned to do a faction of action heroes from the 80's, one of the coolest assignments I have ever had. I was doing these after doing 2 smash up factions plus a bunch of titans almost in a row, promo art, all the artwork for another card game, stuff for Corvus Belli and all that while working at my other job as an art teacher, so I was exhausted but very happy to be able to paint parodies of movies that are such a big part of my childhood (yeah, I know, binging PG-18 action movies and childhood seems contradictory, but trust me, once I saw First Blood I simply could not go back to The Little Mermaid). Since the theme still was very 80's I continued with the airbrushy look, and I have to say that I'm quite happy with how these came out.

Smash Up Teens

Después de hacer la ilustración de Breakfast Club para Smash Up, me encargaron hacer 4 facciones más seguidas, todas ellas muy ochenteras. Dos ya han sido publicados y otros dos no (al menos por ahora). Este es una de ellos, los adolescentes. Como estaba muy relacionada con los años 80, intenté mantener el rollo de aerógrafo de la parodia del Breakfast Club, y también puse en cada tarjeta un montón de referencias a la cultura pop (algunas de ellas más o menos obvias y otras más oscuras, si por algún casual tuvieras la baraja, trata de encontrarlas todos, pero ten a mano una lupa). Me divertí mucho haciendo esas 4 facciones, pero fue una tarea agotadora (muchas ilustraciones en muy poco tiempo, mientras hacía muchas otras cosas), de hecho, contraje Covid por primera vez mientras hacía estas, así que algunos de estos adolescentes fueron pintados bajo la influencia de fiebre alta. Recuerdos divertidos.

After doing the Breakfast Club illustration for Smash Up, I was commissioned to do 4 more factions in a row, all of them very 80's oriented. Two have been already published, and other two don't (at least for now). This is one of them, the teens. Since it was very related to the 80's I tried to mantain the airbrushy look from the Breakfast Club parody, and also put into every card a ton of pop culture references (some of them more or less obvious and others more obscure, if you have the deck, try to find them all, but have at hand a magnifying glass). I had a lot of fun doing those 4 factions, but it was an exhausting task (many many illustrations in a very short time, while doing a ton of other stuff), in fact I got Covid for first time while doing these, so some of these Teens were painted under the influence of high fever. Fun memories.

Arte para Warcrow/Art for Warcrow

Smash Up, arte promocional parodia de El Club De Los Cinco/ Smash Up "Breakfast Club Parody" Promo Art

En la primavera de 2022 (si mi memoria no me falla), la buena gente de AEG se puso en contacto conmigo porque querían crear arte promocional con rollo retro (creo que la idea en ese entonces era poner esa imagen en una fiambrera como regalo promocional, pero no estoy seguro de si eso llegó a hacerse). No estaban seguros de qué hacer con la obra así que me pidieron que les diera algunas ideas y les envié algunos bocetos para cuatro o cinco propuestas diferentes, todas ellas relacionadas con los años ochenta de una manera u otra. La mayoría eran lo que pensé que esperaban ver, pero dos de ellas fueron ideas locas, que me parecieron muy graciosas, pero que en realidad no pensé que les gustarían, incluyendo hacer una parodia del cartel de la película de 1985 El Club De Los Cinco. Para mi sorpresa, me encargaron no una imagen, ¡sino dos! Uno con los personajes de diferentes facciones de Smash Up realizando actividades radicales ochenteras (como breakdance o trucos de BMX), y el de El Club De Los Cinco. Debo decir que trabajar en esos encargos fue un momento muy divertido, porque tenía total libertad para hacer lo que quisiera, incluso pintar simulando los medios tradicionales disponibles en los años ochenta (acuarelas, tintas, rotuladores, lápices y aerógrafo) y hacer varios fondos alternativos locos ochenteros, trastear con el logo del juego, etcétera. No sé qué pasó con la primera imagen, no creo que haya sido publicada nunca, pero sí con la de El Club De Los Cinco (con uno de los fondos alternativos, los personajes estaban en diferentes capas, así que envié varias opciones de fondo) se utilizó para promocionar el juego hace algún tiempo. Estaba muy emocionado de poder mostrar la imagen, pero en aquel entonces fue cuando todo el libertinaje de la IA explotó por primera vez, y por alguna razón no tenía ganas de compartir nada nuevo en las redes sociales... Pero ahora con un poco de Nightshade, supongo que está bien volver a compartir con cautela cosas nuevas. 

Back in spring of 2022 (if my memory doesn't fail), I was contacted by the good people from AEG, because they wanted to create some promo art with retro vibes (I think that the idea back then was to put that artwork on a lunchbox as a prmo gift, but I'm not sure if that ever happened). They weren't sure about what to do with the artwork so they asked me to do come up with some ideas, and I sent some sketches for four or five different proposals, all of them related with the eighties in one way or another. Most of them where what I thought that they were expecting to see, but two of them were crazy ideas, that I found very funny, but I actually didn't think they would like, including doing a parody of the poster of the 1985 movie The Breakfast Club. To my surprise, they commissioned me to do not one image, but two! One with the charactars from different Smash Up factions doing radical eighties activities (like breakdance, or BMX tricks), and the Breakfast Club one!. Working on those commissions was a very fun time I have to say, because I kind of had full freedom to do whatever I wanted, including painting simulating traditional media available in the eighties (watercolors, inks, markers, pencils and airbrush) and doing several alternative crazy eighties backgrounds, messing with the logo of the game, and so on. I don't know what happened to the first image, I don't think It has ever been published, but the Breakfast Club one (with one of the alternative backgrounds, the characters were on different layers, so I sent various background options) was used to promote the game some time ago. I was very excited to be able to show the image, but back then was when all the AI debauchery first exploded, and for whatever reason I didn't feel like sharing anything new on social media... But now here in Cara, and with some nightshade, I guess it's ok to cautiously share newer stuff again.
